A NOTE FROM THE PRESIDENT

A NOTE FROM THE PRESIDENT:

SPN kicked off the summer season with our annual Memorial Day Party, a gathering that truly had something for everyone. After a delicious potluck—highlighted by Dolly’s perfectly smoked brisket—we paused to honor the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Together, we recited the Pledge of Allegiance and sang The Star-Spangled Banner. We also celebrated our very own World War II veteran, Bob, on the eve of his 101st birthday.

Then the fun really took off. A 30-question Doo Wop quiz put everyone’s 1950s–60s song-lyric memory to the test. Reggie amazed us with 28 correct answers, and Hal followed closely with 26—impressive work, gentlemen. Several lively rounds of “Left, Center, Right” kept the energy high, with Sherrie, Mary, and CJ taking home wins. Meanwhile, Amanda, Judy, Marilyn, Pat, Starr, Hal, Paul, and Sue cooled off with a refreshing dip in the pool. It was a wonderful afternoon, and we’re grateful to Amanda for arranging the use of her neighborhood clubhouse and to Dolly for preparing the fantastic brisket.

After rainy weather forced us to reschedule our VIA bus trip downtown, eleven of us finally set out for a great adventure. We explored the Alamo, wandered the River Walk, browsed La Villita, and enjoyed a meal at Casa Rio. It was a perfect blend of history, scenery, and good company.

Testament from an SPN Member

Many of us find ourselves alone after many years of marriage and raising children. This can happen suddenly and can be very overwhelming. I quickly realized that I was responsible for my happiness and well-being. No one was going to feel sorry for me, and that was the reality of my situation. I was aware of some church singles groups; and with a lady friend, I decided to try one out. Instead, what we walked into was an SPN birthday party. There we were in all of our glory, not knowing a sole, not really even knowing what SPN was. Immediately, we were welcomed to the party, introduced to others, and invited to have some cake. This was roughly twelve years ago, and I have been an active member of this wonderful group ever since. This is a family of friends, a place where you can walk in alone and feel right at home. I have an opportunity to participate in the many activities provided to this group by our Board Members. Yes, SPN has been a blessing for me. I have made many, really good friends. We are active seniors that find strength in knowing others in SPN and having someone to do fun activities with.
