A NOTE FROM THE PRESIDENT

A NOTE FROM THE PRESIDENT:

SPN’s 37th Anniversary Party has come and gone, and the turnout was stellar. The new Board of Directors has been installed and are already hard at work. We sadly bid farewell to Jeannie, Paul, and Dolly as they stepped down from their offices while we happily greeted Luis and Karen as they joined the Board. We are looking forward to another great year of SPN fun and friendship!

Spring is a busy time for our group as we have so much on the calendar. Every Saturday for several weeks in a row in April and the first of May has a different fun event so be sure to check out the details. Of special note is the annual Kentucky Derby party complete with the traditional mint juleps, cucumber sandwiches, derby pie and, of course, the treasured Derby hat contest. A prize will be given for the best male and best female hat, so get your hat ready for showtime. Be sure to bring $$ for betting on your favorite horse ($2 a bet) and for playing “Left, Center, Right.” There’s no better place than Grace’s home for this event. Thank you Grace for hosting once again!

Eleven adventuresome, lovely ladies just returned from an 8-day trip to Costa Rica. Each day was filled with new experiences while touring the area. We walked the numerous hanging bridges in the rain forest; visited a coffee farm; located sloths at the sloth farm; relaxed in the volcanic hot springs; viewed the inactive Arenal Volcano; saw beautiful topical birds, monkeys, and other exotic endangered species at the wildlife rescue center; and cruised the Tarcoles River while viewing numerous giant crocodiles and many varieties of birds. We visited an oxcart factory where oxcarts are hand-painted with elaborate designs. The oxcart is a national symbol of Costa Rica because they were historically used to transport coffee beans. Our last stop before returning to the capitol city of San Jose was at an all-inclusive beach resort on the Nicoya Peninsula for three nights where we enjoyed seeing and hearing a colony of Howler monkeys living near our rooms as well as many beautiful Scarlet Red macaws flying everywhere. The iguanas appearing out of nowhere kept us on the lookout. The trip included three meals a day, and we enjoyed foods that were unfamiliar to us as well as the delicious soursop juice made from the soursop fruit. Of course we had our fair share of delicious Costa Rican coffee. A great time was had by all!

Testament from an SPN Member

Many of us find ourselves alone after many years of marriage and raising children. This can happen suddenly and can be very overwhelming. I quickly realized that I was responsible for my happiness and well-being. No one was going to feel sorry for me, and that was the reality of my situation. I was aware of some church singles groups; and with a lady friend, I decided to try one out. Instead, what we walked into was an SPN birthday party. There we were in all of our glory, not knowing a sole, not really even knowing what SPN was. Immediately, we were welcomed to the party, introduced to others, and invited to have some cake. This was roughly twelve years ago, and I have been an active member of this wonderful group ever since. This is a family of friends, a place where you can walk in alone and feel right at home. I have an opportunity to participate in the many activities provided to this group by our Board Members. Yes, SPN has been a blessing for me. I have made many, really good friends. We are active seniors that find strength in knowing others in SPN and having someone to do fun activities with.
